YOGA

In "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali," yoga is described as "Chitta Vritti Nirodha," or "the cessation of mental fluctuations." It emphasizes calm, mental control, and self-reflection as key objectives, promoting inner peace.

YAMA

It is the first step of the eight, according to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, guiding towards a meaningful life. It encompasses ethical principles that guide the practitioner's behavior in the world, being essential in the yogic practice.

NIYAMA

It is the second step of the eight in Patanjali's teachings, involving personal practices for self-discipline and inner growth, such as purity, contentment, self-study, self-discipline, and devotion.

ASANA

The yoga asana, reflected in "Sthiram Sukham Asanam," highlights a firm and comfortable posture. This phrase from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali balances stability and comfort in poses, promoting harmony between the mind and body.

Why Hath Yoga?
It teaches discipline and control of the mind, body, and breath.

To understand the origins of Hatha Yoga, it is essential to explore its historical context. In Sanskrit, "Hatha yoga" translates to "discipline of force," a force that seeks to balance the internal polarities. "Ha" represents the sun and active energy, while "Tha" symbolizes the moon and relaxation. These energies embody the duality of balance between solar and lunar energy, action and relaxation, which we aim to harmonize within ourselves.

During practice, this journey is reflected in the Sun Salutations at the beginning to warm up and activate the body, and in the final relaxation, Savasana. While the most well-known classical text is the Hatha Yoga Pradipika from the 15th century, its origins date back to yogic traditions between the 2nd and 5th centuries BCE. Although this book offers practical concepts, it's important to remember that it was written a long time ago, and some parts may be less relevant today.

The history of yoga spans across time and space, making it difficult to pinpoint precise dates. The same applies to the various styles of yoga, whose schools have evolved over the centuries, sharing the core concept of uniting body, mind, and soul.
